new carb and intake

First I have a quick complaint, then we’ll move on to the good stuff. Bolting on a pipe really sucks. I know I complained about this a little bit last time, but I didn’t elaborate on the nuts. You can get a socket on one of them, but not the other. You can’t get a socket on the other side because of the angle of the header. Ok, that’s fine…I’ll just use a wrench, right? Nope. That only works until you can just about get it tight and then it’s at too much of an angle to really tighten it down because the cylinder fins are in the way. Lame.

I thought I could make a spacer to put the nut in a location where I could get a good angle on it. I even stopped at the hardware store and bought a few parts, but I realized when I got home that it wouldn’t work. The engine studs just aren’t long enough. I searched for coupling nuts from McMaster-Carr, but they wanted about $9 for them by the time I shipped them here. Treats has basically the same thing, so I figured I would support him. More waiting on parts…I love it.

Ok, enough of that. Here’s the good stuff. I received a new chain, intake, 21mm carb, and spark plug cap.

I started with the chain thinking that would be pretty easy. I should have known that it wouldn’t mount up as easy as I thought. I had to shorten it by about 10 links or so and I don’t have any chain tools. I ended up having to improvise with my angle grinder, a spare master link, a socket, and my vice. That took me a little while, but I eventually got it.

At least I knew what I was up against with the intake and carb. Here is what the intake looks like when you get it.

I ground down both sides to the parting line. This allows enough of the engine stud to stick out to get the nuts tightened down while still leaving some threads exposed. I wonder what this intake is actually meant for?

The carb came with a 100 jet. I changed it out for a 90. That should be a good starting point and should have it running rich during break-in.

Check out how tight the clearances are on this setup.

I haven’t experience any ill effects by running my carb at a slight angle. I don’t foresee anything different happening here.

Tomorrow I’ll probably run the new throttle cable and pull the crank off in preparation for welding. Stay tuned for more pictures and complaints. :)

A-hah, a real air filter that fits in that space! I’ve been running no filter for a while with no ill effects except carb spew under my side covers. That set up is a nice, but tight fit on a metra 65.
